Warsaw Modlin Airport
Generała Wiktora Thommée 1a, 05-102, Nowy Dwór Mazowiecki, PolandFacts and History about Warsaw Modlin Airport
Warsaw Modlin Airport (IATA: WMI and ICAO: EPMO) is an international airport serving Poland's capital, Warsaw, located 40 kilometers (25 miles) north.
Ryanair is the airport's only regular carrier, with seasonal services from other airlines such as Enter Air. Warsaw Chopin Airport is the city's primary international airport.
The main facility at Warsaw Modlin Airport is the modern two-story passenger terminal with a total area of 13 380 square meters. Everything is simple and functional, with contrasting grey and orange tones.
The structure consists of two floors above ground level and one underground floor with technical rooms.
On the ground floor, there are 21 check-in points, four security checkpoints, lounges, commercial zones with duty-free stores and bars (both in restricted and generally accessible areas), and four check-in desks, known as the GATE. The airport personnel, Border Guards and Customs, and the ground handling agent, have offices on the first floor.
Warsaw Modlin Airport is Poland's first airport explicitly designed for low-cost airlines and charters. International short- and medium-distance flights are handled at the airport. Air operations are carried out around the clock.
History of Warsaw Modlin Airport
It was initially intended for military use during the Second Polish Republic in 1937 but was never used. Instead, it was used as an airbase by the German Luftwaffe in occupied Poland during World War II.
It was used by Polish and Soviet air forces after the war, between 1945 and 2000. The Polish Ministry of National Defence declared the airfield closed in 2000. The runway at the airport was in disrepair. It lacked proper lighting and modern radio navigation aids such as an Instrument Landing System.
The airport was converted for civilian use in the early 2000s, primarily replacing the now-closed Etiuda terminal for low-cost carriers at Warsaw's main airport.
It was September 2009, tenders were being accepted, and funding from the EU had been secured for an opening in 2011 for the Euro 2012 Football Tournament.
Construction finally began in October 2010 and was supposed to be completed before Euro 2012; however, the deadline was missed, and the airport opened in July 2012.
Mazowiecki Port Lotniczy Warszawa-Modlin Sp. on 11 July 2012, according to a decision of the President of the Civil Aviation Authority, Mazowiecki Port Lotniczy Warszawa-Modlin Sp. z o.o. The Public Airport Certificate and permission to operate a public airport were granted.
